Another Canadian Eider
in the North Sea area |

On
15th December 2009 an adult male Northern Canadian Eider
Somateria m. borealis was
found in the Haringvliet a tributary to the northern part of
Rheine-Meuse delta in the SW Netherlands. It displayed
frequently to a group of male Mallards. It fed on the small
freshwater mussel Dreissena polymorpha
and in doing so was accompanied by a European Coot
Fulica atra.
The
bird is very similar to the specimen of
borealis which is in the collection of the
Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto which was collected at
Sukkertoppen in Davis Strait near W.Greenland on 10th March
1910.
Ron
Pittaway wrote: ' Most authorities consider Greenland breeding
Common Eiders to be borealis.
It is also the subspecies found in the eastern Canadian Arctic
north of Labrador and Hudson Bay.
S.m.V-nigra breeds in the western Canadian
Arctic and Alaska. There is a hiatus between
borealis and
v-nigra in the central Arctic. Jean Iron
and I are very interested in the Hudson Bay Eider
sedentaria.'
